Ethereum news: Network will move beyond Bitcoin-style limits as new scaling tools mature

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced that the network is nearing a significant turning point as key scaling upgrades, PeerDAS and zkEVMs, transition from research to functional code. He argues this combination will shift Ethereum into a more powerful decentralized network by solving the core tradeoff that limits blockchains: achieving decentralization, consensus, and high bandwidth simultaneously. PeerDAS, which allows nodes to verify data availability by sampling small portions, is already live on mainnet, serving as a prototype for sharding scalability. Concurrently, zkEVMs are reaching production quality, with the remaining focus being safety and robustness at scale, potentially leading to limited zkEVM nodes appearing in 2026. Buterin views this as a practical solution to the blockchain trilemma, moving beyond theory to live code by splitting verification work across the network rather than requiring every node to replicate all data.
