Bitcoin Core Development Rises in 2025 With More Devs, Code

Bitcoin Core development experienced a busy year in 2025, with 135 developers contributing code, up from just over 100 in 2024, according to Jameson Lopp. These developers changed 285,000 lines of code, a jump of over 3% from the previous year, although the number of contributors is still below the 2018 peak of nearly 200. This development uptick coincided with a significant year for Bitcoin's price, which hit records over $126,000. Furthermore, code commits to Bitcoin Core increased by 1% to 2,541, and email volume on the Bitcoin Development Mailing List jumped 60%. Key achievements for Bitcoin Core in 2025 included increasing the OP_RETURN data limit and passing its first third-party security audit by Quarkslab, which found no high or medium-severity vulnerabilities.
