Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin argued that for the network to achieve true trustlessness—where protocols operate automatically without developer oversight—it must increase the number of people who fully understand the entire blockchain. He believes this requires making the protocol simpler, even if it means sometimes sacrificing technological features. Currently, if a protocol is too complex for most people to grasp, users must still trust the small group who can maintain it. Buterin emphasized that increasing comprehension is an underrated form of trustlessness. This sentiment is echoed by layer-2 solutions like INTMAX, which noted that complex privacy protocols merely shift who users must trust. Ethereum's roadmap acknowledges its current complexity and aims to lower barriers to entry, making it as frictionless as a Web2 application through upgrades like smart contract wallets and easier node operation.
