CoreWeave collapse sparks fears of cracks in AI infrastructure boom
Summary
CoreWeave (CRWV) has experienced a sharp decline in its share price, falling over 60% from its June high, fueling fears that the AI infrastructure boom is weakening. The fragility of this buildout is highlighted by operational delays, such as construction setbacks due to heavy rain in North Texas, colliding with the company's heavy reliance on high-interest debt to finance NVIDIA AI chip purchases. Furthermore, CoreWeave depends on a small number of major customers like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta for most of its revenue. Investor confidence was further shaken when CoreWeave's proposed $9 billion acquisition of Core Scientific collapsed after shareholders objected to the exposure to CoreWeave's leveraged balance sheet. This spillover effect is also impacting Bitcoin miners who pivoted to high-performance computing, such as IREN and Cipher Mining, whose shares have also fallen significantly after major surges earlier in the year.
