Stripe’s stablecoin blockchain Tempo launches public testnet
Summary
Tempo, the joint blockchain project by Stripe and Paradigm focused on stablecoins, has launched its first public, open-source testnet, allowing anyone to run a node and test features. This launch initiates a phase focused on scale, reliability, and integration experience, with plans to onboard more infrastructure partners and stress-test throughput under real payment loads.
The live features on the testnet include dedicated payment lanes, stablecoin-native gas, a built-in stable asset decentralized exchange, fast deterministic finality, and modern wallet signing methods. Tempo aims to provide instant, deterministic settlement and predictably low fees, qualities general-purpose blockchains often lack for financial applications. Paradigm's Georgios Konstantopoulos noted that users can create stablecoins via the TIP-20 token standard directly in their browsers, though collateral requirements for the mainnet are not yet specified.
This development follows the initial unveiling of Tempo four months prior and a recent $500 million fundraising round at a $5 billion valuation. The project boasts significant design partners, including OpenAI, Deutsche Bank, Standard Chartered, and Shopify, and has recently added major names like Mastercard, UBS, Kalshi, and Klarna, with Klarna already launching a USD-pegged stablecoin on the network.
