Nunchuk: The Open-Source Mobile Multi-Sig Wallet Now Securing Over $1 Billion in Bitcoin

Nunchuk Inc. is an open-source, non-custodial mobile wallet specializing in multi-signature (multi-sig) Bitcoin security, self-custody, and inheritance, with little competition in the mobile space.

The wallet recently announced it is securing over $1 billion in Bitcoin. Its commitment to self-custody was tested in 2022 when activists used a Nunchuk multi-sig wallet to secure over $1 million in Bitcoin donations for the Canadian Freedom Convoy protests. When the Canadian government issued a Mareva injunction demanding Nunchuk freeze funds, the company, being non-custodial software, refused, stating they could not comply as they do not hold user keys. This event solidified Nunchuk's reputation for censorship resistance.

Today, Nunchuk is the only fully featured, open-source multi-sig mobile wallet and is the first significant implementation of miniscript, enabling powerful, customizable Bitcoin smart contracts. It offers advanced features like decaying multi-sigs for inheritance, which can be set up without a third-party intermediary, contrasting with competitors who often require co-signers and thus gain access to user data.
