Ethereum’s first ZK-rollup, ZKsync Lite, to be retired in 2026

Cointelegraph
ZKsync Lite, Ethereum's first ZK-rollup, will be officially deprecated in 2026 after successfully validating its proof-of-concept.

Summary

ZKsync Lite, the original zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup launched on Ethereum by Matter Labs in 2020, is scheduled for a planned, orderly sunset in 2026. The team announced that the network, which was designed for fast transfers and NFT minting but lacked smart contract support, has served its purpose by proving the viability of production ZK systems.

Development on ZKsync Lite ceased in early 2023 following the launch of ZKsync Era, the zkEVM successor that supports smart contracts. The ZKsync team assured current users that funds remain safe, withdrawals to Layer 1 (L1) will continue functioning, and concrete migration details will be shared soon. Data indicates that ZKsync Lite currently holds under $50 million bridged value, significantly less activity compared to ZKsync Era.
