Coinbase reopens app in India after two-year hiatus: report

Coinbase has reopened its app to Indian users via an early-access program, marking a return to the market after regulatory issues forced it to scale back operations over two years ago. Currently, Indian customers can only conduct crypto-to-crypto trades, with a full fiat on-ramp planned for 2026. Coinbase previously disabled UPI support in April 2022 and reportedly halted all services in September 2023. The exchange's return follows increased engagement with local regulators, including registering with the Financial Intelligence Unit for AML oversight. This move aligns with Coinbase's broader expansion strategy, which included an investment in local exchange CoinDCX. India remains a vibrant crypto market, ranking first globally in adoption.
