ZKsync to deprecate ZKsync Lite in 2026, sunsetting Ethereum’s first ZK rollup

The Block
ZKsync announced plans to deprecate its original ZKsync Lite rollup in 2026, paving the way for newer systems.

Summary

ZKsync plans to deprecate ZKsync Lite, its initial zero-knowledge rollup launched on Ethereum in 2020, sometime next year (2026). ZKsync Lite, originally known as ZKsync 1.0, was a payments-focused Layer 2 solution that validated key zero-knowledge technology concepts but lacked smart contract functionality. Matter Labs, the developer, stopped active development on Lite in March 2023 upon launching ZKsync Era, a full zkEVM. Approximately $50 million in user funds remain bridged to ZKsync Lite, but the network currently handles very few operations; ZKsync assured users that funds remain safe and withdrawals to Layer 1 will continue functioning. The deprecation is orderly and does not impact other ZKsync systems built with ZK Stack or its privacy chains.
