Ledger says popular chip used on Solana phones vulnerable to unstoppable attack

Cointelegraph
Ledger discovered an unfixable hardware vulnerability in the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chip used in some phones, including Solana Seeker.

Summary

Ledger security engineers Charles Christen and Léo Benito reported that they achieved "full and absolute control" over smartphones using the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 (MT6878) chip, which is used in devices like the Solana Seeker, by exploiting a vulnerability via electromagnetic pulses during the boot process. This fault injection vulnerability is embedded in the chip's silicon and cannot be fixed with a software update, leaving users permanently vulnerable to private key extraction. Although the attack success rate is low (0.1% to 1%), it can be repeated rapidly, leading to access within minutes. MediaTek responded by stating that the MT6878 chip is designed for consumer products, not finance applications, and is not hardened against physical hardware attacks like electromagnetic fault injection (EMFI).
