Crypto lobby slams ABC’s ‘sensational’ Bitcoin article in complaint

The Australian Bitcoin Industry Body (ABIB) has lodged a formal complaint with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) regarding a recent article about Bitcoin. ABIB claims the article presented a biased view, portraying Bitcoin as volatile and linked to criminal activity while ignoring its potential benefits for energy grids and humanitarian efforts. The complaint alleges the article relied on “sensational language” and outdated tropes, breaching ABC’s editorial policies. ABIB points to data showing only a small percentage of Bitcoin transactions are linked to criminal activity (0.14% in 2024) and highlights increasing institutional adoption and its use as a store of wealth. The ABC has 60 days to respond, and the matter could be escalated to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) if unresolved. A recent report by Perception indicates that mainstream media coverage of crypto is mixed, with 28% of articles being negative.
