Europol, Switzerland, Germany Authorities Seize $1.51B Bitcoin Laundering Service Cryptomixer

CoinDesk
Europol, Swiss, and German authorities dismantled the Cryptomixer service, seizing servers, data, and $29 million in BTC used for laundering illicit funds.

Summary

European Union law-enforcement agency Europol, in coordination with Swiss and German police, dismantled the cryptocurrency-mixing service Cryptomixer between November 24 and 28. The operation resulted in the seizure of three servers, the cryptomixer.io domain, over 25 million euros ($29 million) in bitcoin, and more than 12 terabytes of data. Authorities allege that Cryptomixer, which has operated since 2016, facilitated the laundering of more than 1.3 billion euros in bitcoin proceeds derived from activities like drug trafficking, weapons sales, ransomware attacks, and payment-card fraud. Crypto mixers obscure transaction trails, making them popular tools for cybercriminals, similar to the previously targeted Tornado Cash. This action marks another significant mixer shutdown supported by Europol's forensic analysis.
