El Salvador Partners with Simple Proof to Timestamp Government Documents on Bitcoin Blockchain

El Salvador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Environment have officially partnered with Simple Proof, a bitcoin-based document timestamping company, to protect government records using Bitcoin blockchain technology. The announcement occurred during the Bitcoin Histórico conference, where Simple Proof CEO Carlos Toriello highlighted Bitcoin's role as an uncontrollable clock for certifying document authenticity. This initiative continues El Salvador's application of Bitcoin beyond finance, allowing verified records to be publicly accessible via dedicated government portals. Peter Todd, creator of OpenTimestamps (the protocol used), clarified that only cryptographic hashes, not the documents themselves, are stored on Bitcoin, ensuring network efficiency while protecting millions of documents against tampering and enhancing institutional transparency.
