French authorities open investigation into TikTok’s algorithm and risks to minors

French authorities have initiated a preliminary investigation into the video-sharing app TikTok due to concerns regarding the potential dangers it poses to vulnerable minors, including content that may encourage suicide. This action follows scrutiny from a French parliamentary committee, which labeled TikTok a harmful influence on young users. The investigation focuses on youth protection, data transparency, and content moderation practices, especially in light of its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. This probe aligns with broader European regulatory actions, as the European Commission has also preliminarily found that TikTok violated the Digital Services Act by obstructing researchers' access to platform data.
