Btrust Names Bitcoin Core Contributor Abubakar Nur Khalil as New CEO

The Bitcoin development nonprofit Btrust has named Abubakar Nur Khalil, a Nigerian Bitcoin Core contributor, as its new Chief Executive Officer. Khalil previously served as interim CEO and will now step down from his non-voting board position to report directly to the organization's directors for a renewable three-year term. Btrust, which received initial funding from Jack Dorsey and Jay-Z, supports open-source Bitcoin development primarily in the Global South, including Africa, Latin America, and India. During his interim leadership, Btrust increased partnerships and reported record grant distribution, issuing over $1.7 million since mid-2024. Khalil, who co-founded Btrust Builders, stated his goal is to strengthen systems and scale the organization's impact to ensure Bitcoin remains accessible globally. The appointment marks a transition for Btrust from early-stage growth to broader execution, focusing on continuity and building long-term developer support infrastructure.
