Ledger’s new native multisig rollout sparks criticism over ‘cash cow’ fee model
Summary
Ledger introduced a new native multisig feature alongside the Nano Gen5 device and a revamped Wallet app, allowing in-house transaction verification without third-party tools. However, this rollout has drawn significant criticism from developers and users due to the introduction of fees: a $10 flat fee for standard transfers and a 0.05% fee on ERC-20 transactions, on top of network gas costs. Critics, including security researcher pcaversaccio, labeled this a "cash-cow" tactic contradicting Ledger's cypherpunk ethos. Furthermore, the feature is not supported on the older, widely used Nano S device, leading to frustration among longtime users who feel excluded or "censored" because the new system requires capabilities the older hardware lacks.
