OpenAI Launches AI Browser That Could Change Crypto Security Forever

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Atlas on October 21, 2025, an AI browser with an "agent mode" allowing ChatGPT to autonomously perform complex tasks like filling forms and making purchases. While the crypto industry anticipates AI agents managing digital wallets and trading, security researchers warn of critical vulnerabilities like "prompt injection," where hidden malicious instructions on websites can trick the AI into executing unauthorized actions, such as stealing one-time passwords or transferring cryptocurrency.

Researchers demonstrated that these attacks bypass traditional web security measures because the AI agent operates with the user's full permissions across all logged-in accounts. For crypto users, this means stolen funds are permanently lost. Although OpenAI has implemented safeguards, experts remain skeptical, noting that prompt injection seems systemic. To mitigate risks, users are advised to never grant direct wallet access to AI agents, enable MFA, set strict spending limits, and remain logged out of sensitive accounts when using agentic features.

Despite the dangers, AI and crypto are converging because blockchain offers the 24/7, fast, programmable money required by autonomous agents. However, experts like Forrester analyst Magdalena Yohannes caution that current AI technology cannot reliably or securely automate Web3 transactions, citing unsolved challenges in decentralized models, regulation, and the fundamental security flaws.
