Binance’s $33M charity gift becomes Malta’s political minefield

Malta's Finance Minister, Clyde Caruana, publicly backed the Malta Community Chest Fund's decision to reject a 30,644 BNB donation from Binance Charity, which was worth about $200,000 in 2018 but is now valued at approximately $33 million. The charity refused the funds due to reputational concerns regarding Binance and because Binance insists on receiving patient information, including crypto wallet addresses, for direct transfer, which the charity has refused to provide. Malta's President, Spiteri Debono, previously called the contribution a "bogus donation" due to Binance's poor reputation. The dispute dates back to 2018, and while Prime Minister Robert Abela urged the charity to reconsider to avoid losing the funds, the issue has become a point of contention within Malta's political establishment.
